Here at the winery we are proud to maintain some of the old hand crafted traditions handed down by our Grandmothers and we offer this produce for sale to our visitors.
Cyprus boasts a unique usage for the grape juice gleaned from their vines. The main delicacies to be enjoyed include Soutjouko, Palouzze, and Kkefteria all having been made from the juice of the grape.
Soutjouko looks like beeswax candles and Kkefteria are squares of dried grape juice mixture which is called Palouzze when served cold and spread like jam onto toasted bread.
The Soutjouko is made by threading a long piece of string with nuts (usually almonds) this is then dipped in hot grape juice and flour. The mixture is boiled in a large witch's type cauldron and after the dipping the strings are hung up to dry in the sun.
Glyko is the name to describe the Cypriot way of preserving fruits and even some vegetables in special sweet syrup. A visit to any home will often result in the offering of a small saucer of these sticky sweet delights and one of the top favourites has to be the pickled walnut Glyko. There is a multitude of 'pickling options' with women in the villages keen to pickle everything from oranges, figs, cucumber, apricots, water melon, grapes, and cherries. A jar of these delights is a perfect gift for those with a sweet tooth.
A hearty Appetite.
The winery also offers hearty food for visitors all of the dishes served will hark back to a time when food was healthy, wholesome, and free from any chemical intervention. Vouni maintain this healthy option and will offer hungry guests a selection of Cypriot dishes that will delight both the carnivore and the vegetarian.
Every day there will be a different main dish as the cook will be going with what is in season so the perfect day is a visit to the winery, followed by lunch and a glass or two of good wine, in fact one could say that this describes an almost perfect day out.
