How to reach Vouni Panayia

A visit to the winery makes for a delightful and easy drive that shows off to visitors some of the more fertile farming areas of the region, and as you drive higher up the hills you can for a little while escape the humidity and experience fresh clean air scented by the many thousands of fir trees that have been planted all over the hills that lead to the Vouni Panagia winery. 

Take the B7 road north out of Paphos and drive to the outskirts of Stroumbi, on your left is a petrol station, now take the next right hand turn marked to Polemi. Keep on through this village and after about ten minutes you wind your way around a series of gentle bends taking you higher and higher. The ears may start to pop a bit but, after you pass the dam on the left hand side there’s only a few minutes before you reach the winery which sits on a steep bend at the corner of the main road.

The area around the winery is interesting as a few minutes drive away is the village of Panagia and the birthplace of President Makarios, here there is a small museum dedicated to the man and close by, the Makarios family home has been retained much as it was when as a child Makarios and his family would have slept under the same roof as their donkeys and cattle.

Go through the village and after about five minutes drive you come to the Chrisorroyiatissa monastery, not a name that exactly trips of the tongue but blame the revisionist’s derivation of the original name which was Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate. The church is on the right hand side of the road and when you enter through the courtyard and into the cool climes of the church you can admire the glorious candelabra, panels of icons, and hand painted frescoes.

It’s probably easier to first visit the monastery and then the museum and head back down to the winery where you can relax over a glass of wine and a lunch eaten on the balcony of the winery restaurant area , a combination of good food, wine, and a superb panoramic view of the rolling countryside beyond.
